Portrait of Brenda Moore.

Brenda L. Moore is one of the nation’s leading military sociologists who over three decades has researched and published books and articles on women and racial minorities in the military.

She is a subject expert on contemporary topics such as the propensity of American youth to serve in the military, sexual harassment in western militaries, and effects of changing laws on the representation of women in the U.S. military.  She is also an expert on the history of Blacks, Asians, and Hispanics in the American armed forces.

Moore authored the foundational book “To Serve My Country, to Serve My Race: The Story of the Only African American WACS Stationed Overseas During World War II,” a story later told in the motion picture “The Six Triple Eight,” written and directed by Tyler Perry.

She also wrote the book “Serving Our Country: Japanese American Women in the Military during World War II,” consisting of interviews she conducted with former Nisei servicewomen.

In 2023, she was the recipient of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society (IUS) Morris Janowitz Career Achievement Award for outstanding contributions to military sociology, service to IUS journal and community of scholars, and public service addressing issues important to military personnel and veterans.
